An unfortunate side to the evangelical movement in Korea is increased competition. Churches number in the tens of thousands here, and are competing so intensely for members that pastors feel pressured to engage in a kind of one-upmanship: sending congregants on as many overseas missions as possible. New markets and riskier missions tend to garner more publicity, which until now has translated into more kudos and ultimately more money for the pastor and the church.

Will the hostage crisis put a damper on Korea´s missionary zeal? Some say the crisis will certainly reduce the desire of would-be missionaries to go abroad, particularly since Seoul has been unable to secure the release of the hostages thus far. The widespread public criticism also may force Korea´s spirited Christians to recalibrate their strategies.

“It will definitely lead to a purge at churches” on the peninsula, says Douglas Shin, a pastor involved in missionary activities with North Koreans. “People will wonder if it is worth the risk now, and donors will probably withhold more funds because they fear they could be causing someone harm.” Though Shin believes the Afghanistan mission was sincere, he expects that what he calls ‘camcorder missions’ - assignments that are more or less photo ops for groups looking money for supporters - to wane in the near future.

♣one-upmanship(←one-up+man+ship) ←one-up(한 수 앞서려는)+man(남자)+ship(수완): 남성끼리의 한 수 앞서기 수완/행위/술책/전술: One-upmanship is the systematic and conscious practice of making one´s associates feel inferior and thereby gaining the status of being ‘one-up’ on them.

명사 record(기록)의 발음은 [레코-드], 동사 record(기록하다)의 발음은 [리코-드], recorder(기록기)의 발음은 [리코-더]다.

The term has acquired a negative connotation, referring to a carefully planned pseudo-event, often masqueraded as news.

이 신조어(coined word)는 미국의 역사학자 대니얼 조지프 부어스틴(Daniel Joseph Boorstin·1914~2004)의 유명한 저서 ‘The Image: A guide to Pseudo-events in America(이미지: 미국의 의사현실에 대한 입문서)’에서 비롯됐다. The term pseudo-event describes events or activities that serve little to no purpose other than to be reproduced through advertisements or other forms of publicity.

New words are made by putting two words together to form compounds. When two words are combined in their entirety, the result is considered a compound rather than a portmanteau. For instance, breakfast is a compound, not a portmanteau, of break and fast. A portmanteau is a word formed by fusing both sounds and meanings from two or more words to give a combined or loaded meaning. Portmanteaus are similar to compounds, but parts of the words that are combined are deleted. For example, brunch is a portmanteau, not a compound, of breakfast and lunch.

예컨대 breakfast(아침식사)는 break(중단하다)와 fast(단식)의 합성어가 아니라 복합어다.

포맨토(portmanteau)는 본래 프랑스어에서 온 영어로 a large rectangular travelling bag with two compartments, opening flat in two halves(두 부분으로 되어 양쪽으로 반절씩 납작하게 열리는 직사각형의 큰 여행가방)이다.

그는 그의 작품 ‘Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There(거울을 통해, 그리고 앨리스가 거기에서 발견한 것)’에서 최초로 이 말을 사용했다. 그는 그 책 속에서 등장인물을 통해 Jabberwocky(알아들을 수 없는 말)에 대해 설명한다.

“Well, slithy means lithe and slimy…You see it´s like a portmanteau - there are two meanings packed up into one word. (그런데 말이야, slithy는 lithe(나긋나긋한)와 slimy(끈적끈적한)를 의미하지.

    ⊙animatronics(애니마트로닉스) ←animation+electronics: 영화제작 등에서 동물·사람의 로봇을 실제처럼 보이게 하는 전자공학기술 ⊙publizen(퍼블리즌) ←publicity(자기홍보)+citizen(시민): 자신을 알리는 신세대 ⊙Viagra(비아그라) ←vigor(활기)+Niagara(나이애가라 폭포):‘활기가 폭포처럼 넘친다’는 의미 ⊙hazmat(독극물)←hazardous(위험한)+materials(물질): 위험물질 ⊙ginormous(엄청 큰)←gigantic(거대한)+enormous(엄청난): (크기·양이) 예상 이상으로 큰(많은)

◈Oxbridge(옥스퍼드대와 케임브리지대)←Oxford(옥스퍼드대)+Cam-bridge(케임브리지대): 영국의 두 명문대 Oxford와 Cambridge를 옥스퍼드대에서는 Oxbridge라 하고 케임브리지대에서는 Camford(Cambridge+ Oxford)라 한다.

◈kidult←kid(아이)+adult(어른): A kidult is a middle aged person who enjoys being a part of youth culture and doing and/or buying things that are usually thought more suitable for children.(자신이 청춘문화의 일부인 것을 즐기며 통상 어린이에게 더 어울린다고 생각되는 것을 하거나 구입하는 것을 즐기는 중년(中年)의 사람이다.)

◈fanzine(열성 팬들이 만든 잡지) ←fan(팬)+magazine(잡지): A fanzine is a nonprofessional publication produced by fans of a particular cultural phenomenon such as a literary or musical genre for the pleasure of others who share their interest (문학이나 음악장르 같은 특정 문화현상을 열광적으로 좋아하는 사람들이 자기들과 흥미를 공유하는 다른 사람들의 즐거움을 위하여 만든 비(非)직업적 출판)

◈Hotel Visitel(호텔 비지텔) ←Hotel Visit(체류)+Hotel: visit는 라틴어 visere(보러 가다)에서 나온 말이다.

◈Bollywood(발리우드/인도영화산업←Bombay(봄베이)+Hollywood(할리우드): Hollywood has always been a ‘Mentor’ to the world of cinemas. ‘Bollywood’ derived from the combination of the film city in India, Bombay and the Hollywood. Over the years Indian cinema has build and set its trend and made a global presence in the world cinema.

◈info(r)mercial(정보광고) ←information(정보)+commercial(광고): Infomercials are television commercials that run as long as a typical television program (roughly 28 minutes, 30 seconds) outside of peak hours, such as daytime or late night (usually 2:00am to 6:00am) (피크타임이 아닌 낮이나 늦은 밤(보통 오전 2~6시)에 전형적인 TV프로그램(대략 28분30초)처럼 방영되는 TV광고)

◈blaxploitation(흑인고객 유치) ←black(흑인)+exploitation(이용): Blaxploitation is a film genre that emerged in the United States in the early 1970s when many exploitation films were made that targeted the urban African American audience. Blaxploitation films starred primarily black actors, and were the first to feature soundtracks of funk and soul music.

◈infotainment(인포테인먼트: 오락성보도)←information(보도)+entertainment(오락): Infotainment refers to a television program with a mixture of current events news and entertainment features, such as celebrity interviews, commentaries, reviews, and human drama stories. Critics have claimed the combination of the two aspects is a conflict of interest by corporate news outlets - focusing on marketing, not journalism.

The term ‘infotainment’ thus may be a pejorative among those who hold professional journalistic values in esteem. Infotainment should not be confused with documentaries, educational television or hard news programming. These go more in depth of the subjects they cover and can even provide classroom level instruction in areas such as mathematics, science, biology, or writing, etc.

◈docutainment(다큐테인먼트)←documentary(기록물)+entertainment(오락): Docutainment refers to a television programme which includes both news and entertainment content, or a blending of both. Similar to infotainment. Docutainment is often implied to mean lightweight documentary, that is, documentary which lacks serious substance and focuses on trivial matters such as celebrity lifestyles.

◈docudrama(다큐드라마)←documentary(다큐멘터리)+drama(드라마): A docudrama (docu-drama, drama-documentary, drama-doc, or docu-fiction) is a type of drama (usually a film, television show, or play) that combines elements of documentary and drama. It may consist entirely of actors performing recreations of documented events, or (in the case of film and television docudramas) may combine that with contemporaneous footage of the events themselves.

This two-part production about the life and times of Douglas MacArthur is no docudrama. It is instead a documentary or, more precisely, five hours of docutainment, a fascinating biography.

◈docu-soap(다큐-소프)←documentary(다큐멘터리)+soap opera(연속 홈 멜로드라마): A Docu-soap is a kind of format for a reality television program. The shows are characterized by the focusing on the interpersonal drama between the participants rather than the subject of the show itself. In many reality television shows, the viewer and the camera are passive observers following people going about their daily personal and professional activities. This style of filming is often referred to as ‘fly on the wall’ or cinema verite.

    ◈mockumentary(모큐멘터리) ←mock(조롱·가짜)+documentary(다큐멘터리):

Mockumentary names a film and TV genre. The mockumentary is presented as if it were a documentary, though it is not factual. It is a commonly used medium for parody and satire.

fictional documentary(허구 다큐멘터리), false documentary(거짓 다큐멘터리), fake documentary(날조 다큐멘터리)라고도 하며 우리나라에서는 주로 fake docu(페이크 다큐)라 한다.

Seeing is believing(보는 것이 믿는 것이다)은 옛말이다.

Merriam-Webster는 웹사이트(www.m-w.com)에 ‘Merriam-Webster unveils its new edition of Collegiate Dictionary 메리엄-웹스터는 대학생용 사전 신판을 선보이다’라는 제목의 광고(Advertisement)를 올렸다.

A former dot-commer working a McJob was listening to some headbangers while laying out the last of his dead presidents for longnecks and some less than heart-healthy Frankenfood. Confused? Consult the new edition of the Collegiate Dictionary from the folks at Merriam-Webster.

Once a decade, Merriam-Webster updates its best-selling dictionary. The 11th edition, available in bookstores Tuesday, includes 10,000 new words and more than 100,000 new meanings and revisions among its 225,000 definitions. ‘Comb-over’ (an attempt to cover a bald spot), ‘macular degeneration’ (an eye problem that primarily affects the elderly), and the adjective ‘heart-healthy’ (good for the heart), are all new to the 11th edition.

◈dot-commer(닷커머) ←dot-com(인터넷 기업)+er(사람): someone who works for an online outfit (인터넷 온라인 업체에서 일하는 사람)

◈McJob(맥잡)←McDonald+job: low paying and dead-end work(저임금에다가 장래성도 없는 직종).

(4)both a hard rock musician and a fan(하드록(헤비메탈)음악가와 팬)

    ◈longneck(병맥주)←long(긴)+ neck(목): beer served in a bottle with a long neck(목이 긴 병의 맥주)

    ◈heart-healthy Frankenfood(심장에 좋은 프랑켄푸드): (1)heart-healthy←heart(심장)+healthy(건강에 좋은): (음식·요리 등이) 심장에 좋은 /저(低)지방의 (2)Frankenfood(프랑켄푸드)←Frankenstein(프랑켄슈타인)+food(음식): genetically engineered food(유전자변형식품)

(Compound Word)

In politics, a spin doctor is someone who is skilled in public relations and who advises political parties on how to present their policies and actions.

In public relations, spin is a sometimes pejorative term signifying a heavily biased portrayal in one´s own favor of an event or situation. “Spin” often implies disingenuous, deceptive and highly manipulative tactics. State-run media in many countries also engage in spin by selectively allowing news stories that are favorable to the government while censoring anything that could be considered critical.

Skilled practitioners of spin are called ‘spin doctors’. The term is borrowed from ball sports such as cricket, where a spin bowler may impart spin on the ball during a delivery so that it will curve through the air or bounce in an advantageous manner.

I will call again one of these days(며칠 사이에 또 들르겠습니다), I will call at your office one of these days(다른 날 귀사를 방문하겠습니다) 등에서 생성된 합성어다.

Will call is an American term for a box office where patrons of entertainment venues go to pick up already-bought tickets for an event (such as a play or a concert) just before the event. With the onset of the Internet and E-commerce sites which allow customers to buy tickets online, this service has seen increased popularity.

In the wholesale and retail trade industry, a ‘will call’ item is merchandise that is to be picked up at the seller´s place of business. A ‘will call’ memo is given to wholesale delivery drivers as an instruction to pick up item(s) at the address stated on the memo. In the last 20 years or so, the term ‘pick up’ is replacing the older ‘will call’.

The ‘will call’ term is also commonly used to refer the customers picking up merchandise in-person for business that normally ship their products. This is sometimes done by the customer to save on shipping charges, and is often frowned upon by companies that are not designed for in-person sales. As a result some companies ban the practice of ‘will call’ pickups and others implement a “will-call” charge for in person pickups.

※refer the customers picking up merchandise in-person for business that normally ship their products: (1)refer A for B는 ‘A에게 B를 주목[유의]시키다’ (2)ship(운송하다) 앞에 should가 생략되었다.

    ◈wasband or hasbeend: 전남편

일찍이 셰익스피어는 ‘Was’ is not ‘is’(과거는 현재가 아니다)라고 말한 바 있다. 전자는 He was her husband에서 생성된 것이다 (was+band→wasband). He has been her husband에서 생성된 것이다. (has+ been+d→hasbeend). You will always remain my hasbeend

    이러한 동의어(synonym)를 ‘cheeky synonym’이라고 한다. cheeky는 rude(귀에 거슬리는), bold(뻔뻔스러운), sassy(방정맞은), mischievous(장난기 어린), pert(주제 넘는), disrespectful(실례되는), naughty(버릇없는)라는 의미다.

    ◈ makeunder (make+under): 생 얼굴

    make·under(화장과 머리손질을 하지 않은 그대로의 모습)는 국내 사전에는 등재(登載)돼 있지 않은 신조어로 make·up(화장)과 make·over(헤어스타일 등의 변신)의 상대어(antonym)다.

Make·under: a change of appearance in which a person is given a simpler look, especially one with little or no makeup and a basic hairstyle(생 모습: 꾸미지 않고 변화를 주는 - 특히 거의 혹은 전혀 화장을 하지 않은 생 얼굴과 머리손질을 하지 않은 생 머리의 용모)이라는 의미다.

이 단어가 사용된 example citation(인용예문)으로 캐나다 최대의 발행부수(circulation)를 자랑하는 ‘The Globe and Mail’에 실린 ‘Flab and all (군살밖에 없잖아)’라는 제목의 2002년 9월7일자 기사를 보자.

What is shocking about Jamie Lee´s ‘makeunder’ isn´t just the sight of a real middle-aged woman in her underwear. For a post-feminist generation of women who were raised to reject artifice before they ever had anything to hide, it is a shock to learn that we have betrayed ourselves. In the struggle for liberation, the battlefield, as Germaine Greer once observed, is still our bodies.

Equal partners with our husbands, at the apex of our careers, we are still undone by the sight of ourselves in the mirror. Jamie Lee, by celebrating the real, might be giving us all a lesson. If we aren´t grown up enough to be cool with our real selves at 40, when is it going to happen?

    Notes(주석):

The ‘Jamie Lee’ mentioned in the example citation is actress Jamie Lee Curtis, who, in the September issue of More magazine, appeared in ‘before’ and ‘after’ pictures. The before picture showed her in all her Hollywood glamour, with perfect makeup, stylish hair, haute couture dress and shoes, and being fussed over by three assistants. The after picture showed her ‘authentic self’, as she called it: no makeup, no fancy coif, and an outfit consisting of a simple sports bra and spandex briefs that showed off a bit of pudginess. She had had, in other words, a makeunder.

(위의 인용예문에 언급된 ‘제이미 리’는 잡지 ‘More’ 9월호에 게재된 사진 ‘before(전) after(후)’의 주인공인 여배우 Jamie Lee Curtis(제이미 리 커티스)다.

The fuss that followed the publication of these pictures made it seem as though the makeunder was a new phenomenon, but it has been around for a while. Jane magazine has had a ‘Makeunder’ feature since at least 1997, and the Mirror newspaper has had a similar feature since 1999.

그녀는 왕년의 미남 명배우 토니 커티스(Tony Curtis)의 딸이며 그녀의 1998년 저서 ‘Today I Feel Silly, and Other Moods That Make My Day 오늘 느낌이 시시하다: 그러나 나를 신나게 한 다른 변덕’은 뉴욕타임스의 베스트셀러 목록에 올랐다.

Copyleft is a play on the word copyright.(카피레프트는 카피라이트에 대한 재치 있는 상대어다.)

right의 반대개념이 left이듯 copy·right의 반대개념이 copy·left다.

이것의 반대개념이 copy·left(지적재산 공유)다.

    democracy(민주주의) ←dem(민중)+ -o- +-cracy(지배)/meritocracy(능력주의)←merit(장점)+ -o- + -cracy(지배): [o]는 -cracy가 자음으로 끝나는 단어와 결합할 때 음성체계상 넣는다.

Meritocracy is a system of a government or another organization wherein appointments are made and responsibilities are given based on demonstrated ability(merit) and talent rather than by wealth(plutocracy), family connections(nepotism), class privilege, cronyism, popularity(as in democracy) or other determinants of social position and political power.

The word plutocracy itself is derived from the ancient Greek root ploutos, meaning wealth and kratein, meaning to rule or to govern.
