The Duke of Wellington has been widely quoted as saying that the Battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton. Prime Minister Gordon Brown seems to have gambled that the battle of Britain′s looming elections will be won by reference to that same exclusive greensward.
Eton College is one of Britain′s best-known and, among a certain class of person, most sought-after private schools. The duke′s remark, possibly apocryphal, is presumed to have related to the character-building qualities of its rough-and-tumble, winner-takes-all sport known as the Eton Wall Game or perhaps, more prosaically, to pugilism among its students.
But, with his evocation② of its playing fields, Mr. Brown has a different target in mind, not so much the Emperor Napoleon, who lost at Waterloo in 1815, but the pretender David Cameron, the opposition Conservative leader and an alumnus of Eton.

그러나 이번 고든 브라운의 말은 웰링턴 공작이 1815년 워털루 전투에서 맞섰던 적인 나폴레옹이 아니라 이번 선거에서 그의 강력한 맞수인 보수당의 리더이자 이튼 졸업생인 데이비드 캐머런을 염두에 두고 한 말이다.

By assailing Mr. Cameron′s quintessential poshness of voice, manner and upbringing④, Mr. Brown sought to coax forth some of those old, egalitarian Labour instincts⑤ that seemed to get so lost in the get-rich-quick era of his predecessor, Tony Blair.
Mr. Cameron responded with old Etonian hauteur. “It′s a petty, spiteful, stupid thing to do,” he said, “but if that′s what they want to do, you know, go ahead.”
To outsiders, the debate might seem faintly ridiculous if it were not for the malaise in which the exchanges bubbled forth.
