문장의 키워드를 찾아라

영어 달인들의 이야기를 들어보면 빠지지 않고 나오는 이야기가 멋진 표현이 있는 문장을 메모해뒀다가 실생활에 활용한다는 것이다. 그렇다면 앞에 나열한 10개의 문장이, 당신이 영어책을 보다가 단어와 표현이 인상 깊어서 기록해둔 것이라고 가정하자. 이 문장을 복습하려면 메모를 보고 읽는 수밖에 달리 방법이 없을 듯하다. 문장과 문장 사이에 아무런 연관이 없기 때문이다. 여기에 문장이 더 보태지면 메모해둔 것을 보지 않고 복습하기란 원천적으로 불가능해 보인다.

그러나 문장을 눈으로 보고 읽지 않고도 복습할 수 있는 방법이 있다. 먼저 10개의 문장 각각에서 단어 하나씩을 고르고, 문장을 다시 정리해보자. 골라놓은 단어를 ‘키워드’라고 부른다.

battle - Titanic battles are being fought for retail and distribution space.

factory - What a thrill it will be for him to visit Mr. Wonka’s marvelous factory!

husband - I want my husband to wander as free as wind that shapes the dunes.
